Their inner surfaces may lose their lubricity and become rough due to calcium or a fat-like substance (cholesterol). This is called arteriosclerosis. As a result of this hardening, blood clots may occur in the vessels and the arteries may get obstructed. Tissues fed by arteries die when deprived of nutrients and oxygen. If this situation occurs in the brain arteries, the person will get paralyzed.
If this occurs in de arteries of the hart, a part of the heart muscles may die off. This is known as a heart attack.
Many substances are used in the treatment of arteriosclerosis. It is recommended to consume foods that will prevent this hardening. The most important of these is walnuts, which contain a high percentage of unsaturated fat. These oils have cholesterol-preventing properties. Linoleic acid found in unsaturated fat is not produced by the body. It is also not present in animal fats. This fatty acid is found in walnut oil at a rate of 60%. In order to meet the energy needs of the body without increasing the cholesterol ratio and to prevent arteriosclerosis, a certain amount of walnuts should be eaten every day at every age.
